Insurance and FSA

I am an out-of-network or private-pay provider, which means you would pay fees out of pocket after each session.  In my experience, this allows me to provide you with more quality and specialized care without the influence of insurance-based rules and decisions.

It is your decision whether to file for reimbursements from insurance.  Though I do not guarantee reimbursement, If you have PPO, it will often pay a portion of your spending (usually 20-80 %), depending on policy.  Please note that superbills include the service code and diagnostic code.  To protect your privacy, I would not fill out any forms from or communicate directly with the insurance company in any way.  You can also file for reimbursement from your FSA account, regardless of whether or not you have PPO.

If you would like to call your insurance and ask about your out-of-network benefits. You'll want to find out:

  • If you have out-of-network benefits

  • What percentage of the cost of therapy sessions will be reimbursed

  • What your deductible is, if any

  • If there is a limit on the number of sessions you can have per year

  • What documentation you need to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement

Private Pay Therapy

Pros

  • Clients get better therapy outcomes when therapists have better resources to invest in maintaining a healthier caseload, allocating funds for training, and achieving work-life balance to enhance emotional capacity.  (Insurance pays therapists significantly less, leading to therapists needing to see more clients weekly and sacrificing vacations or training funds. These factors directly impact the outcome of therapy.)

  • More control and flexibility in treatment approaches

  • Get more specialized care using your out-of-network mental health coverage if available

  • Increased privacy and comfort in discussing sensitive issues

  • No insurance company involvement or limitations on therapy type and frequency

  • Choose a therapist that has the best fit, saving money and time from trying around within the list provided by the insurance company.

Cons
  • Higher costs than in-network

  • Upfront payment after each session

  • Limited reimbursement options from insurance companies
